The vet was driving down the winding country lanes one winters evening with the rain lashing down and his wipers flickering from side to side. As he wheeled his vehicle round the tight bend he gasped in horro at the horse and rider that appeared as if from nowhere. Slamming his foot on the brakes he was too late: the frightened animal reared up, throwing rider to the left ditch and bolted head-long into the skidding car....car and rider ended up in the right ditch. Tremulous the vet grabbed his bag and got out..he dashed across to glance at the rider and then dashed back to the horse. He spoke aloud to sooth the beast as he examined it. "How are you, Old Girl? Are you hurt?....There , there.." then spotted the shattered leg. He reached into the bag, pulled his gun and spared the beast more suffering. Then he walked back to the other side of the road and shouted into the ditch "How are you, Sir? Are you hurt?.......
